An Aircraft Carrier’s Helm

An aircraft carrier like the USS Yorktown is not a small ship and it does not turn without effort, yet a small wheel at its helm as seen here is all that is required to turn the mighty ship.  The Yorktown is now a decommissioned museum ship docked at Patriot’s Point in Charleston, South Carolina but it is still a sight to behold. There is an efficiency and purpose to every piece of her.

Tomcat

An America flag waves above an F-14 Tomcat as it sits aboard the Essex class Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown at Patriot’s Point near Charleston, South Carolina.  I don’t know about you, but I spent many an afternoon as a kid watching this aircraft in Top Gun waiting for the words “We’re going ballistic Mav!”.

Sitting Area

Sitting Area at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club

Another one from Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club.  I photographed this the same day I captured the corridor at the Yacht and Beach Club Convention Center.  I was drawn to the texture in the chairs and the symmetry.  Sometimes it’s the simple things that draw you in.

Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club

I was able to spend some time last week at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club, and wow- was it ever a treat!  Everything about the resort is top notch.  What you see here is the main corridor of the resort’s Convention Center.  I was fascinated with this hallway and the symmetry on display.   Many thanks go to the staff, who were very kind and accommodating as I took my time shooting.

The Comerica Building, Downtown Orlando

Comerica Building - Downtown Orlando

Today’s photo is a 2 exposure RAW tonemapped with photomatix.  I did shoot 3 exposures, however, I felt I lost the drama in the sky by tonemapping using the 3 exposures.
While I got the drama in the sky, I also got a lot of noise which needed to be addressed in post.  I also got a little more haloing than I would have liked.

The haloing I fixed by taking the -2 exposure and opening up a layer mask then using a brush at about 15%.  That took care of that.

As for the noise, that was a bear, I ended up denoising a couple of times before using topaz to give it a little pop.

Finally, I finished it off with some sharpening.  I thought I was done, but the long blue strip that runs the length of the building was a bit oversaturated.  So, I quick masked that, took it to a group, dropped the saturation and used a levels adjustment to get it just right.

And, there it is.  Hope you enjoy it.

The Plaza, Downtown Orlando

Today’s Photo is of the Plaza in Downtown Orlando, Florida. I was fascinated by the circular top of this building and the colors. If you have never been in Downtown Orlando, it’s a must visit spot during your time in Florida.

Mother and Child

Today’s Photo is an sweet moment between a mother elephant and her calf. I captured this while on the move on a safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Lens here was a 70-200 2.8L; Post-processing was done using photomatix (single raw) and Topaz Adjust.

Stave Church, Epcot World Showcase

Today’s photo is from the Norway Pavilion at Epcot’s World Showcase. I love the feel of the sky and the color during this time of the day. Heading over to Epcot again tonight. Can’t wait!

Wandering Finds

Today’s Photo: a small street my wife and I found while wandering the streets of St. Augustine.

Jacksonville Landing

An image from Jacksonville Landing in Jacksonville, FL. The Landing is a must visit spot if you’re ever in Jacksonville. Be sure to go there at night, it’ a beautiful, and very lively, area.
